There are many ways a virus can get into your computer. Most of them are covered and monitored by the usual antivirus, although they have some holes in their security as is the antivirus effectiveness for USB devices.

When you install a USB memory stick the antivirus usually takes longer to detect the new device than the virus itself needs to get into your system and infect it. It will then be detected by the antivirus when it scans the computer in its next scheduled scanner, but your computer is already infected.

This program is activated as soon as you connect the USB device and does not allow there to be a connection between the computer and the contents of the memory until it is not guaranteed to be a secure device.
